Texas Hold’em is the most popular variant of poker today. The rules of the game are easy to learn and can be played both in land based casinos and in online casinos.
Check out The Rules of Poker for a more detailed explanation of the ins and outs of playing online. Keep reading below for a brief summary.
Firstly, a dealer button is used so that players know who is posting the blinds. For the deal to begin, the player to the immediate left of the dealer pays a small forced bet called a blind and the player next to the that player pays a bigger bet. Each player is then dealt two cards that will only be known to that player (hole cards).
When everyone has been dealt their cards, bets are placed moving in a clockwise direction. The first bettors (small and big blind players) have the options to call (pay the same as the big blind), raise (pay more than the big blind did) or fold (the player hands in their dealt cards especially if those cards are not likely to win that round).
After the first bets, we move onto the next round called “flop”. This begins by removing the top card from the deck and keeping it face down (“burn”). The dealer then deals three cards face up (community cards) into the middle which players use to make the best poker hand. Another betting round follows and after that comes the “turn” where the dealer deals another card in the middle with its face upwards. Another betting round follows.
In the next round called the “river” another card is burned and the last card is dealt into the middle- also with its face upwards. Another betting round follows.
Finally, in the showdown, all remaining players reveal their cards. The winner is the player with the best five-poker hand (the three cards and their hole cards).
Poker saw its big boom at the hands of publicized poker tournaments. Poker tournaments had been around for years, since the 1970s, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that the games started to be filmed and broadcast widely. The introduction of hole-card cameras made poker a spectator sport allowing viewers to follow along and join in the drama. Two of the biggest tournaments, World Series of Poker (WSOP) and World Poker Tour (WPT) were broadcast bringing an ever-widening coverage of the game.
There are many tournaments for poker but none more sought after than the Big Three. This includes WSOP, the Aussie Millions and the recent PokerStars Championship. WSOP (World Series of Poker) is held every year in Las Vegas. Starting with just seven top players in 1970, it is now host to thousands of players of all levels each year. With 65 different events covering a wide range of poker variants, WSOP caters specifically to those who prefer Texas Hold’em with the vast majority of the tournament catering to this version.
The Aussie Millions is a more recent addition to poker as it only began in 1997. Held in Melbourne, Australia it is considered to be the biggest poker tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. This tournament caters to the super high rollers and holds the record for some of the biggest buy-ins in history with a Super High Roller buy in at $250,000 and it is not even the main event!
The final tournament in the Big Three is the very new PokerStars Championship. In fact, so new that 2017 will mark its first year. Held in the Bahamas, Panama and Macau it continued through Monaco and will finish up in Barcelona this August. Mixing gaming with beautiful sites and amazing cities, PokerStars Championship is the place to be.
With so many tournaments on offer, any level of poker player can have a go and potential get that big win.
Poker is one of the most popular casino games, and household games, today, and surprisingly its history goes back to before the 19th Century. Most historians believe that the origin of poker is the Chinese game known as domino cards played during the festive seasons. They estimate this to date back to around 11th BC. Here we take a brief look at Poker through the ages:
- Egyptian poker: During the 12thand 13thCenturies, the Egyptians had their own version of poker which was played with large decks engraved using traditional tools.
Persian poker: In the 16thCentury, the Persians created their own poker version which was extremely popular. They had 96 decks of wood or ivory, each with different decorations.
- Spanish poker: During the same period, the Spanish were playing a version of poker using three cards for each player and the players would bluff each other by holding a poor card against the other two. They called this card game the ‘Primero’.
- French poker: The French caught the bug and advanced the ‘Primero’ which evolved into a game known as ‘Poque’. Eventually the ‘Primero’ became the mother of modern poker when the French took it across to Canada. When it reached America, it evolved to become the modern poker we know today. You can get more information here.
- Modern poker: In the 19th Century it was known as the cheating game. Players from all walks of like enjoyed playing this game. It has now become a popular online game. In fact, now with the advent of online casinos you can find many traditional games, like bingo for example, that have been converted into an online version, with plenty of extra bonuses than the land varieties offered.
Poker is one of the oldest games played in the world. Many games have come and gone, others faded into oblivion, but poker has withstood the test of time and is still a favorite in-person and online game.
Poker is a popular casino game. As such it has made the transition to an online game extremely well and is experiencing a continuing increase in popularity. There are a large number of games and ways to play poker online and these will be outlined below.
Online poker offers a wide range of games. There are virtual poker games, video poker and of course Live casinos also offering poker. These games come in a wide variety of stakes and bet limits, game types and numbers of decks. From Texas Hold’em, Caribbean Stud to Deuces Wild and Joker Poker, there is something for everyone. These games are easily accessible via many different casino sites and players can simply search for their favourite game in order to access it. Online poker is played in exactly the same manner as in a land-based casino. With the many different versions available it is important that players carefully choose which game to play.
Online Poker Bonuses
When it comes to bonuses, the online gaming world has plenty. Many casinos offer a welcome bonus that can be used on any game though the majority of the wagering requirements are not in favour of poker players as many of them only offer 30% when playing poker on bonus money. For players specifically playing poker it can be beneficial to simply aim for a poker only site. These sites will also offer welcome bonuses such as match deposit bonuses that require players to deposit a certain amount of money into their account. These can range from 50% match to 200% so it is worth players shopping around to find the best deals. Very occasionally there will be no deposit bonuses available but these are rather few and far between.
With the arrival of online casinos, poker is more accessible than ever. There are more game choices on offer all the time and of course excellent bonuses to help new and old players alike.
There is a game for everyone. If you look carefully, there are many online games that you can choose from. Contrary to perception, online casino games do not even need to be about gambling. There are many games that are highly developed, engaging, and fun for which you don’t need to pay.
Although the games we write about are not a perfect fit for everyone, they are definitely worth trying out. Here are three online casino games that we feel you will enjoy immensely, and if you don’t find what you’re looking for, check out Best Web Casinos for some advice on finding the perfect game for you.
This is the classic online game. It is unlikely that there is any single online casino that does not offer poker. Developed in the 17th century, poker has evolved into a family game over years. Business magnates such as Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, as well as ordinary farmers in deep rural villages have played poker in any of its forms.
Book of Ra
This is a casino game by provider Novomatic that is more elaborate than poker. The game has a modern gaming engine running it. The result is a slot game that can be classified as a video slot, with the gaming properties of a video game. The game has a theme and a storyline, making it more engaging for players who don’t like abstract games like poker.
The third game that is worth trying is Cleopatra. The game is designed after the goddess who is a subject of many mythical stories. The game appeals to people who love mythology. Like Book of Ra, theme of the game is heavy throughout and gameplay is almost like playing a video game on a console.
The best games, however, are the ones that you will enjoy playing. Go out there and find them.
In order to be successful in this market you need to be competitive, attractive and offer a wide range of immersive games that help pull in your players and keep them there. However, there are many factors that can impact on an online casino’s popularity. Some things to look for when picking a site to play on include:
- Are they licensed and regulated by a well governed body?
- The software and gamer interface needs to be smooth, simple to use and understand, and most importantly inviting.
- Are the banking options secure and reliable?
- Does it have a ‘Live’ feature where you can engage in real games with live dealers and other online players?
- Bonuses are an all-important way of making extra cash on your winnings.
- Check reviews and online information from forums to see what experiences others have had.
- Lastly, check to see what their withdrawal fees are, as there is no point playing on a great site with enticing games if you are about to lose a large percentage of your winnings in a withdrawal fee.
As we all know, good news travels slowly, but bad news travels at the speed of light. A few unhappy customers and an online casino could go belly up in a few short months, if they cannot claw back their reputation in time. So, in order to become popular an online casino needs to have a green check mark next to all of the above bullet points, as well as being able to show that they respond positively to all customer feedback, and that they can resolve any issues quickly to minimize the chances of players losing faith in the site.
Getting into online poker is really easy. Poker is just poker, right? Well actually that’s not entirely true since there are many different types of poker, which all play the same hands, have different ways to make them and several rule variations. For a beginner, it can be daunting enough, without all of the new ways to play that the internet has allowed popular poker sites to introduce.
Popular poker sites have introduced these tables to offer the player a fast paced way to play hundreds of hands in a short time period. They might take the novice player a little getting used to but anyone who enjoys ring games and doesn’t like waiting too long for their next hand will enjoy these.
Players who like something a little slower paced will probably be more interested in tournaments. They come in several different varieties, and most sites hold several all at once. Depending how many players have entered, the tournament can take a while, so it’s best to avoid starting one just before work or bed.
These are played much the same way as they would be in real life, great if you don’t have time for a tournament and/or want an alternative to the zoom/rush games.
If you’re just starting out learn to play for free, you don’t want to risk your money right away. Find a site that offers free ‘play money’ games, such as Poker Stars, and pick up the basics in a risk-free environment. That way you can get an idea of how often you’re likely to win once you move on to the next level.
Make sure you have a good internet connection
When you’re playing poker online, the last thing you want is to lose your internet connection during a game. Some poker sites offer protection for these moments, but not all of them do. Make sure you have a strong internet connection and check the site’s rules to find out what happens if you do get disconnected.
Be patient, and accept you can’t win them all
It’s easy to rush into online poker expecting to win big, but the reality is that it will take time to learn how to play. Don’t be afraid to fold often, and be patient until you have a strong hand.
Know your limits
Before you start playing for real money, set limits for yourself on how much you’re willing to lose. Don’t go over this limit, and always seek help if you feel you’re becoming addicted.
